Word has reached us through official channels that Dave Grohl just dropped into Mastodon's studio and isn't laying down tracks for the new album.

We've just had word from Mastodon's spokesperson that the below photo of Dave Grohl was taken when the Foo Fighters frontman popped into the studio to say hello - and not to record on the new album.
Altogether now: boo.

Now this is interesting - a photo has surfaced on Mastodon's Facebook page that looks a lot like it's of one Dave Grohl in the studio with them.
You can check out the photo below - textbook Grohlisms to look out for: rock gurn / funny-shaped guitar / the fact his tattoos have basically identified him / the wonderfully landscaped beard - but we don't know yet whether he was just dropping round to say hello or if he's contributing guitar to the metallers' as-yet-untitled fifth album.
Here's a thought: maybe he's playing drums? A twin-battery thing between Grohl and Brann Dailor would be mindblowing. Anyway: here's the picture. There'll be more from Mastodon in the coming months in Rock Sound, so put a pot of coffee on and get comfortable.
